Defusing Conflict Through Negotiation

One of the stark realities of the business world is that conflict arises on a regular basis. Different people have varying and often conflicting interests and needs – when these interests are not compatible with those of others, conflict is the result. In some situations, conflict spirals out of control and several damages or completely cuts off previously productive relationships. In other situations, conflict is handled properly and is channeled so that individuals can overcome their differences and focus on finding a collaborative solution. This second approach is ideal. Whether a Channel Manager is having a difficult time solidified an agreement with a prospective partner or a Project Manager is wrestling with a manager who refuses to provide resources for an engagement, knowing how to manage conflict is imperative.

Generally, the best way to resolve difficult issues is to treat the situation as a negotiation, knowing that by working together, two or more parties can reach amicable solutions to difficult problems. The Defusing Conflict Through Negotiation class teaches participants how to step back and view conflict-ridden situations as negotiations that can be worked through and resolved in a principled manner. Our one-day session focuses on a straightforward negotiation process. Whether having to prepare for a face-to-face meeting or reviewing a colleague’s proposal to resolve a resources issue, our process enables you to know how to move through the negotiation process to resolution. We also focus on stronger communication skills by teaching participants the different negotiation styles they are likely to encounter. Additional time is spent learning how to recognize and counter the most commonly used negotiating tactics. This helps participants ensure that discussions are cordial and don’t spiral out of control into adversarial situations.
