Communication and Assertiveness Skills (Half-Day)

Far too many people find themselves in situations where individuals with more dominant and aggressive personalities attempt to push their agendas at the expense of others. As is often the case, those who are doing the pushing end up squashing the interests of those being pushed. The results can negatively affect teamwork, productivity and employee morale. For those who have less aggressive and more collaborative personalities, these situations can be difficult and extremely stressful. In some cases, those with less assertive personalities find themselves withdrawing and avoiding conflict at all costs. This can not only have an adverse affect on one’s confidence, it can also inhibit one’s ability to succeed with an organization as internal team leaders tend to look for those with leadership qualities as future management candidates.

Being assertive is less about being dominant and more about expressing one’s opinion and taking personal responsibility for one’s rights. Rather than steamrolling others, assertiveness relates to the ability to make direct requests, determine limitations, reinforce verbal messages, give and receive feedback and express disagreement and anger when appropriate. It is not about hiding from conflict or bottling up emotions but showing others that one’s opinion and needs are truly important. Our half-day version of the standard one-day Communication and Assertiveness Skills training workshop, enables participants to not only be more assertive but also how to communicate more effectively with colleagues, managers, direct reports and customers. We focus on teaching one how their assertiveness can contribute to their success by allowing them to achieve personal and team goals. Various communication activities, group discussions and other application exercises are utilized to bring skills to life. Delivered in a more condensed format, participating through the half-day Communication and Assertiveness Skills Training class will enable participants to express their rights, opinions, requests and feelings in a direct, honest and open manner.
